Returning to teaching after having been a stay at home mum for almost four years would be a huge change for anyone. For me there is also an added layer of worry as I'm returning to work with a life changing diagnosis. I had my first son in 2022 and my second little boy came along in February 2025.
Shortly after the birth came a diagnosis of Sheehan's Syndrome. I had severe hyponatremia which caused grand mal seizures at home as a result of an adrenal crisis. I then spent four days in an induced coma and had an ICU and long hospital stay.
In those early days I wondered if I could return to work as a teacher. Now the time has come to go back, whilst navigating this new life post-diagnosis and the multiple medications and hormone replacements which I take daily. I currently take hydrocortisone, levothyroxine, oestrogen, progesterone and desmopressin to replace the hormones which my body no longer makes itself.
It's a scary thought going back, particularly as I have had such a long time off and I would be lying if I said I'm not worried about how the new me will cope. I plan to return in just a few short weeks so it's very nearly time. I'm both excited and apprehensive as up until now I have been able to really listen to when I need to rest and can take an easier day (as much as you can with two toddlers!) with plans which can be adjusted according to energy levels.
Shortly after diagnosis, it was said to me that the medications I take must work to fit around my lifestyle and not the other way round. I often think about this conversation. It sounds great in theory but I will be two years post diagnosis in February and am still awaiting tests in order to optimise my hormone replacement so that I can hopefully reach this elusive optimal level.
However, I am very fortunate to have a supportive family who will help me navigate this new routine as I return to the classroom and in seeking some balance between caring for my children and everything that goes with it and teaching. I can't forget to add that I will also be enjoying the life that was very nearly taken from me as much as I can and hopefully fitting in the things I love like travelling and seeing friends and family.
